ACLS - Provider Course

This is an intensive 14 hour course that is designed for those individuals who have either never taken an ACLS course or, have allowed their provider certification to lapse. The ACLS Provider Course assists the student/participant in obtaining the critical skills and knowledge in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment/management of the 10 core ACLS cases by conducting the Primary and Secondary ABCD Surveys and implementing the ACLS algorithms. Proper CPR skills by all student/participants will be demonstrated and evaluated for proficiency throughout the course. All basic cardiac pharmacology will be introduced and discussed throughout the body of the course. Additionally, all basic cardiac arrhythmias will be introduced, discussed, and demonstrated both statically and dynamically with the use of multiple rhythm simulators, a manual defibrillator, and static strips. The 10 core ACLS cases include respiratory emergencies, use of an AED, and the 4 types of cardiac arrest:

  • Ventricular Fibrillation/Pulseless Ventricular Tachycardia
  • Pulseless Electrical Activity (PEA)/Asystole

and 4 types of pre-arrest emergencies:

  • Symptomatic Bradycardia
  • Stable/unstable tachycardia
  • Acute Coronary Syndromes/Stroke

Successful completion of the course includes a satisfactory score on the AHA written examination and skills evaluation during the course.  All student/participants who successfully complete the course are issued an American Heart AssociationProvider Level course completion card.

Course Prerequisites

  • Background and knowledge of cardiac arrhythmias and the ability to recognize and treat arrhythmias
  • Knowledge of the core ACLS medications including dosage and precautions.

AHA requires that all students have access to the current ACLS Provider Manual before, during, and after the course. All students should bring a current American Heart Association ACLS Provider Manual to class. The AHA ECC Handbook is considered optional but recommended.

The Provider course assists the student/participant in obtaining the knowledge and critical skills in order to identify and treat cardiopulmonary arrest and common conditions that may lead to cardiopulmonary arrest in both infants and children.  Basic and advance airway management will be introduced, discussed, and practiced within the body of the course. Proper CPR skills by all student/participants will be demonstrated and evaluated for proficiency throughout the course.
All basic cardiac pharmacology will be introduced and discussed within the body of the course. Additionally, the pediatric algorhythms will be reviewed in order to apply the too slow, too fast, none approach to pediatric rhythm management. All basic cardiac arrhythmias will be demonstrated both statically and dynamically with the use of multiple rhythm simulators, a manual defibrillator, and static strips. Lastly, intraosseous access will be introduced, discussed, demonstrated and practiced for the acute management of arrest and pre arrest syndromes in children by allowing for rapid drug administration and volume replacement.

ECG Dysrhythmia Recognition Course

During this course, student-participants will develop the skills/knowledge base in order to successfully identify cardiac rhythms using a systematic approach following the ECG rules of cardiac rhythm interpretation. Additionally, they will acquire a greater understanding of the “origin/rate” nomenclature universally applied to cardiac rhythms. A broad, interactive lecture format will be used to cover all of the cardiac rhythms originating from the sinus node, atria, AV junction, and ventricles (see attached agenda). A significant portion of time will be spent having individual student-participants identify a host of static and dynamic electronically derived rhythms from multiple rhythm simulators. Both pre and post tests will be applied in order to measure acquired knowledge and competency.

Time allocated:  4.5 Hours

Course Prerequisites

  • None

12-Lead ECG Analysis Course

During this course, student-participants will be introduced to and/or reviewed in basic ECG concepts including: (1) Einthoven’s Triangle; (2) electrode positioning, charge designation, and lead classification of bipolar and augmented unipolar limb leads as well as precordial leads; (3) myocardial ischemic disease findings and progression. Additionally, they will develop the skills/knowledge base in order to successfully identify 12-lead formatted cardiac abnormalities- including S-T segment changes, bundle branch blocks, dynamic T-wave changes – by utilizing a systematic approach of interpretation. Additionally, the student-participants will acquire a greater knowledge and understanding of the categorization of S.T.E.M.I’s. (S-T segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction) by area(s) of significant myocardium involvement including septal (septum), anterior, lateral, inferior, anterioseptal, and anteriolateral categories.  A broad, interactive lecture format will be used to cover all of the topics of discussion.
Lastly, a significant portion of time will be spent having individual student-participants (1) identify ischemic changes/conduction abnormalities in a number of 12-lead derived ECG rhythms and; (2) categorize S-T segment Elevation Myocardial Infarctions using the S.A.L.I. methodology.  A post test may be applied in order to measure acquired knowledge and competency.

Time allocated:  3.5 Hours

Course Prerequisites

  • Strong basic ECG knowledge with emphasis on atrioventricular conduction disturbances.
